With the Bulls, Scottie Pippen Didn’t Get Paid Much But He Got the Rings

The new 10-episode series The Last Dance premiered on ESPN last Sunday. The second episode chronicled Scottie Pippen's frustration with the Bulls' management as the 1997-1998 NBA season started and the team began its defense of the title and quest for a sixth trophy. One of Pippen's main grievances was management's refusal to renegotiate his contract going into that final year. Pippen signed a contract for $18 million dollars over seven years in 1991. So he locked himself into a low risk, low return contract. At $18 million over 7 years, his average salary was $2,571,429 per year. By the time the 1997-1998 season started, Pippen had long been the second best player on the team. Along with Michael Jordan, Pippen was the only other Bull to have won five rings. ...

In 1850, California became the thirty-first state. That same year, the last governor of Mexican California purchased the Rancho Paso de Bartolo. That former governor's name was Pio Pico. The Rancho included areas of the cities of Whittier and Pico Rivera, hence the origin of the name Pico. The ranch also included much of unincorporated Whittier.
